BEST TIME TO GO - Singapore lies pretty close to the equator so it is hot and humid all year round.

  • February to August is the dry season and September to January is the wet season.

  • May to August is burning season in Sumatra which can make the air in Singapore unpleasant.

VISAS - Click here for information

  • You can enter Singapore, Malaysia and Batam Island (Indonesia) without a visa. It always pays to have at least 6 months validity on your passport dating from the end of the trip.

  • 169 countries can enter Batam for 30 days without a visa. If you are one of those who do need one you should be able to get it on arrival.

STAY - Most hotels are available on Booking.com unless otherwise stated. It's best to get bookings with free cancellation and pay on site when you get there. Hotels chosen are usually 3*** or 4 or 5 if they are good value. They are chosen firstly for their location, value for money, positive testimonials regarding cleanliness and service and features like rooftop terraces and great views.

Since the end of Covid a lot of prices have gone through the roof. So if the selected hotel is out of your price range click on the location map and choose something cheaper nearby. Or you might prefer something else but try to stay in the same area.

In Singapore accommodation is expensive and it's difficult to get a decent hotel under $100 especially if you want to be in a good location.

FLIGHTS -

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) - is a major hub in Asia and has direct fights to 137 destinations in 45 countries to 5 continents. It has no flights to South America and only 2 to Africa. There is a MRT stop at the airport so this is the easiest way to get into town.

If you have a few hours to kill this is the airport you want to do it in. There is a free cinema, butterfly garden, famous vendors food court - "Eat Street" and many other distractions to pass the time pleasantly. They are coming up with new ideas all the time. Also for an airport it can be very good value. You can get a delicious pulled tea and top notch curry puffs for around $5.

TIPS -

Most of the sights around Marina Bay are easily walked

  • Start the trip on a Wednesday or Thursday to match up with the Night Safari on Day 9 - Friday and Saturday will result in being there on the weekend which is very busy - or just juggle the days around.

  • The MRT is a great way to get around the larger city. Just put where you are and where you want to go into google maps and hit the train button. It will give you all the travel options, information and times. Pick up your card when you arrive at the airport. Singapore Tourist Pass is best for a few days (Trip 1) and EZ Link is better for a longer stay (Trip 2).

  • Singapore has a network of air-conditioned underground walkways and shops. They are great to escape the rain, the heat and humidity and crossing roads.

  • Travelling light would be a bonus

  • You may save money if you are on Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer program.

  • Learn Singlish - it doesn't take long.

Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the bay Marina Bay Sands Singapore harbour magnificent billion dollars satay club sound and light show tropical plants

BUDGET - Food is cheap and very good. Everything else is expensive by Asian standards but still reasonable by western standards. Unfortunately the Singapore dollar has doubled in value since the good old days. Many of the attractions have hefty entrance fees which limit you to 2 or 3 a day. It seems everything costs $50. Best to budget your time and your money here. Bottom line - bring loads of cash.

Singapore - 3N

  • Singapore was founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1819. It was one of what became the four Straits Settlements which were British Crown centres of trade . Raffles spent time and had an impact of two of the others Penang and Malacca. The fourth and last one Labuan came along in 1912. Raffles died the day before his 45th birthday in 1826. Sixty one years later in 1887 Raffles Hotel was opened by the famous Sarkies brothers. It would later become one of the most famous hotels in the world.

  • The other famous name in Singapore is Lee. Lee Kuan Yew is the man responsible for turning Singapore from a bit of a backwater into what you see today. He was Prime Minister from 1959 to 1990. His son Lee Hsien Loong became the third Prime Minister in 2004 and remains so today in 2022. Here's a few Apps that may help you along. This piece on the infamous Bugis Street will give you some idea of the old Singapore.

  • Arrive at Changi Airport, one of the world's best. It's a great place to be stuck in transit. The MRT has a station at the airport and this is the best way to get into town. It takes half an hour. Look on the map for the closest station and make your way to the hotel you have picked. All are in a good location walking distance to the main attractions. Taxis are reasonably priced and are good for getting home at the end of the night.

  • You need to be at the Singapore River Cruises site before 7.30 pm. It is a half hour walk or less from the hotel. Depending on what time you arrive will affect how much time you have to wander around beforehand. Assuming you have a few hours make your way to iconic Raffles Hotel. You may notice it is on Beach Street but it seems a long way from the water. This will give you some idea of the land reclamation that has gone on here. Wander around, checkout the museum then head to the Long Bar to try the famous Singapore Sling where it was invented. It is considered the National drink. If you have time you could check out the view from the Singapore Flyer or Marina Bay Sands SkyPark.

  • Have the 7.30 Laser Show Cruise booked with Singapore River Cruise. The Bum Boat is another Singapore icon but there are so many of them on this trip I am going to stop using the word. It is a great way to see the city though and the laser show really tops it off.

  • Just next door to the Singapore River Cruise you will find the Jumbo Seafood Restaurant. Get yourself an outdoor table looking out with spectacular views over the river and try the National dish - their award winning best in Singapore, Chilli crab. Plan for a splurge as their menu is full of delicious temptations. If you don't like seafood the river is lined with restaurants. If you like margaritas the Café Iguana next door is the place to go. Good Mexican food too.

  • Spend the night around Clark Quay and Boat Quay where you will find no shortage of bars and clubs along the river to keep you entertained. If you feel like some late night eats head down to Lau Pa Sat Satay Street where you'll find some of the best, and cheapest satay in town. There are over 10 stalls to choose from and they are open till late around 3 am. Grab a cab home, they're pretty cheap.

  • Big day today so you'll need your walking shoes and a hearty breakfast. A kopitam is a coffee house and it's the place to get the National breakfast. They take food seriously around here. If you don't like soft boiled eggs and Kava (Coconut jam) toast they have many other options. Don't miss the pulled tea or Teh Tarik as it's called. It's addictive and you'll find yourself seeking it out at various times of the day. Killiney @ Purvis Street is over 100 years old and it is just around the corner.

  1. Continue south to Singapore's mascot - the Merlion. Singapore means lion city.

  2. Next on the list is the Fullerton Hotel which was a fort in the early days. Have a wander around or ask about the complimentary heritage tours.

  3. Stop in at Tip Top and stock up on some of the best curry puffs around. Surprisingly the sardine ones are reallllly good. Have a Teh Tarik while you're here. Hot and cold are equally good. It's hard to think of anywhere else you could get better value for your money.

  4. Head down to Chinatown and check out the different streets and markets. At the Temple of the Tooth you can actually view one of Buddha's teeth. Or can you? When you start to get hungry make your way to the Chinatown Complex Food Court in Smith St. It is the largest in Singapore and has over 260 food stalls.

  5. From here it's a 2 minute walk to the Chinatown MRT Station. Take the train to Harbourfront Station then take the Circle Line to Haw Par Villa. This used to be the Tiger Balm Gardens and is one of those entertainingly weird and demented places you find around Asia. Visit the 10 courts of Hell to see what hopefully you'll be missing. There is a Bistro / Café next to the pond where you can relax in this one of a kind park with a coffee, Teh Tarik or a cold beer and some light snacks.

  6. Take the MRT Circle Line to Botanic Gardens then change to the Downtown line and get off at Bayfront Station. From here you can start your tour of the Gardens by the Bay. Here is a guide to help you decide what you want to see. Don't miss the Garden Rhapsody show at 7.45 pm or 8.45 pm. There are plenty of places to sit down and have a drink or light meal. Even if you're not into gardens this place is amazing.

  • After the show you can head down down to Kampong Glam and Arab Street. Walk across the Helix Bridge and then it's a 20 minute walk past the Fountain of Wealth or just grab a cab. Haji Lane is the main street but the whole area is loaded with cafes, street art, boutiques, restaurants and bars. If you have caught the pulled tea addiction see if you can find Bhai Sarbat at 21 Bussorah St which has been making some of the best tea in Singapore since the 50's. And the best part is it's only a 7 minute walk back to your hotel. (if you're staying at Hotel Calmo Bugis)

3

  • Off to Sentosa Island today and you can pick your own itinerary. Stick around for sundowners and dinner. How about some Dim Sum to get things started. Walk up to Bencoolen St to Victors Kitchen. It's a 10 minute walk and they are located in the Sunshine Plaza. They open at 10.30 am and advertise having the best custard buns in Singapore. Don't miss the HK Summer Iced Milk Tea either.

  • Walk up to Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station (10 minutes) and take the North East Line to Harbourfront MRT Station. From here you have multiple ways of getting over to Sentosa Island.

  1. Monorail - go up to the 3rd floor of the adjacent VivoCity Shopping Mall.

  2. Walk - across Sentosa Boardwalk, it is only 700m and there are travelators to help you along the way. Also accessed from VivoCity.

  3. Cable Car - from Harbourfront Tower 2. It also connects to Mount Faber. If you have a fear of heights think twice.

  4. Bus  - from VivoCity

  • Once you get over there there are various ways to get around. The island is small enough to walk everywhere, hire a bicycle, segway tour, trams, buses and shuttles. Have a fun day. Watch the sunset with a sundowner in hand. Enjoy dinner and a few drinks at some of the bars.

  • The last Monorail leaves at 23.45 but the Boardwalk is open 24hours per day. If you feel like kicking on a bit longer here are a few bars in Chinatown. Or some all night clubs that are open late. Or is that early?

4

  • Make your way to the airport for your flight. Hopefully Singapore has more than fulfilled your expectations and left you wanting to come back for more. Have a look at the trip below.

4 - 6 BATAM ISLAND - 3N

  • Leave your main pack at the hotel and live out of your day pack for 5 days. Get out of the city and head off for a relaxing break today at Batam IslandMake your way to MRT Bugis and travel to MRT Tanah Merah. Take the bus from here to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. From here catch the 35 minute ferry to Nongsapura Ferry Terminal. This is only a 5 minute drive from the resort. There is only one ferry a day at the moment so you'll need to book it online and work out your times. There are around 10 ferries a day from Harbourfront to Batam Centre which is a 40 minute drive to the resort -

  1. Stay at or near Turi Beach Resort **** - 7.7 hectares of private beachfront landscaped grounds, Indonesian style rooms, 2 outdoor swimming pools, 7 restaurants, 2 bars, balconies with pool or sea views, Spa and Wellness Centre, BBQ Buffet, Happy Hour, Live Music, Water sports, ATM, Car Hire, Minimart, Sun loungers and it's cheap. Like everything over here compared to Singapore prices. And world class golf and diving.

  2. Or you might like the Batam View Beach Resort **** where you can probably afford a waterside villa. They have an outdoor pool, private beach, Spa & Wellness Centre, Watersports, 2 restaurants, bar and numerous other facilities.

  • Spend the next 3 days relaxing by the water, playing in the water, diving, taking advantage of the Spa facilities including massage, eat Indonesian food, eat lots of cheap seafood and drink lots of cheap booze, play golf (there are 7 fine courses - including a 9 holer designed by Jack Nicklaus - there are a couple right next to the resort), hire a scooter or a car and explore the island, catch a sunset, check out the nightlife. In fact there are 6 bridges so you can check out 7 islands. From north to south it is nearly 100 kms and 2 hours riding. So there's plenty to see - check out the tours below the map⬇️.

Johor Bahru Tours

7 Johor Bahru - 2N

  • Make your way back to the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. From there take one of these options to get to Johor Bahru. If you're lucky the Singapore to Johor Bahru MRT line will be finished.

  1. Stay at or near the Amari Johor Bahru ***** - 2 swimming pools, 2 restaurants

  2. Or the Doubletree by Hilton Johor Bahru **** - swimming pool, restaurant

  • You should be here by early afternoon which will give you time to see some of the sights like Jalan Tan Hiok Nee (one of the oldest neighbourhoods) and a great spot for some afternoon tea. Also in the area is Istana Besar the Royal Palace for the Sultan of Johor back in the day.

  • Before the sun starts to set make your way to the Chill Out Sky Bar at the Amerin Hotel for some sundowners with a view. Taxis are reasonably priced here so it's worth using them for convenience.

  • When the hunger pangs start to kick in it's time to head to the Night Market. There are a few to pick from and some only appear on certain nights of the week. Check here to see which one you want to visit.

  • Time for a little nightlife and some duty free drinks (half the price of Singapore). Head to the Zon area near the ferry terminal. There are around 8 bars and clubs here including the Geoventure, Texas Bar, Anchor Pub, Freedom Ultimate Club, The Club and 9mm Club among others. They are arranged in a big square around a fountain.

8

  • Enjoy a big buffet breakfast at the hotel then have a laze around the pool for a while. The good news is today is a "day off" and you can do what you like. Stay by the pool and enjoy your 4 / 5 star hotel for the day.

Singapore - 2N

  • Make your way back to your hotel in Singapore and collect your left luggage. Around 12 - 1pm go to Bugis MRT and take the Downtown line to Newton Station. From here it's a short walk to Newton Food Court which was featured in the movie Crazy Rich Asians. Take your time and have a beer or two with lunch.

  • Back to Newton Station and take the North South Line to Khatib MRT Station. From here you will find a $1 shuttle service to Singapore Zoo. There are a variety of options to choose from and you should pre-book everything you can including the shows. The River Wonders is good value, relaxing and can be done in 3 - 4 hours leading nicely you in to the Night Safari. There are various dining and refreshment options around. If you miss the last train there are plenty of taxis at the entrance. It is a 25 km trip.

10

  • The last day has arrived already. Better make it a good one and start off with a good breakfast. Don't forget to take your bathers / swimmers with you. Take the Downtown Line from Bugis MRT to Little India MRT. Stroll around this colourful neighbourhood while you decide on where you're going to eat. The choices are -

  1. Old Chang Kee - since 1956 - Singapore breakfast set plus all the favourites like curry puffs, noodles, Nasi Lemak etc.

  2. Komala Vilas - since 1947 - Signature dish is the best South Indian Masala Dosai in town

  3. Swee Choon Dim Sum - since 1962 - Opens at 6 am and is one of Singapore's favourites

  • If you get back on the Downtown line at Jalan Besar MRT or Bendeemer MRT Station you will save 15 minutes by not going around the city loop. Take the line to Upper Changi MRT and then catch bus #2 which will drop you off at the Changi Chapel and Museum 7 stops later. It is not open in Mondays. There are free tours and like everything in Singapore everything should be pre-booked online. If you're interested the Johore Battery is a kilometre walk away.

  • Get back on the #2 or #29 bus and continue towards the coast and Changi Village. There are plenty of places for lunch and a drink here. The Hawker Centre is also a great place to have some lunch.

  • Nearby Changi Beach is said to be haunted and was the site of one of the first atrocities committed by the Japanese after they took over Singapore. You can hire a bicycle here and ride around the coastline. Then walk along the Changi Boardwalk and finish up at the Changi Beach Club. Have a swim in the pool and a few drinks on the Deck Bar.

  • When you're ready head back to the Changi Village Bus Terminal and catch the #29 Bus 21 stops to Blk 460 - Stop ID 99009. Transfer from here to Tampines East Mrt Station and take the Downtown Line to Bugis MRT. It should take an hour or so all up. Go back to the hotel and freshen up for a big night out.

  • Head out to a rooftop bar to get the night started and catch the sunset -

  1. For over the top views - Singapore's highest Rooftop Bar over 3 levels 61, 62, 63 floors up try 1 - Altitude Gallery and Bar

  2. Or for something more laid back, close to the hotel and easier on the pocket try Singapore's first Rooftop Bar - Loof.

  • Next destination is Geylang to eat some crabs. If you're at 1 - Altitude take the East West Line from Raffles Place MRT to Aljunied MRT. From Loof take the East West Line from City Hall to Aljunied MRT. Now you just have to decide between No Signboard Seafood Restaurant - Signature White Pepper Crab and where it was invented or JB Ah Meng Restaurant - also White Pepper Crab being one of the Signature dishes. Or perhaps you'd prefer frog porridge or something else from one of the myriad of eating houses in the area..

  • Geylang is a bit wilder than other parts of Singapore so you should be able to have a fun night out. Here's a few places to get started. See some live music - just wander about and have a good time. Most bars here are open until 2 am. And when you get the late night munchies, you're in the best place. Best to get a cab home from here.

  • Pack up and head out on the MRT to Changi Airport. Go a bit early if you want one last taste of this wonderful food. Terminal 3 is best. They have a branch of Tip Top and a place called Singapore Food Street where they have assembled the masters of a range of favourite Hawker dishes in a 60's theme. Other Terminals won't disappoint and you will be met with places like Straits Food Village and Pho Street.
