STAY - If you're travelling in a camper van there will only be a few nights in a hotel before and after the trip. A few days when you arrive to get organised and have a look at the place. Then one night at the end after you've dropped the camper van off.
If you are doing the car and hotel option all hotels are available onBooking.comunless otherwise stated. They will have parking available.
It's best to get bookings with free cancellation and pay on site when you get there. They are chosen firstly for their location, value for money, positive testimonials regarding cleanliness and service and features like rooftop terraces and great views.
Since the end of Covid a lot of prices have gone through the roof. So if the selected hotel is out of your price range click on the location map and choose something cheaper nearby. Or you might prefer something else but try to stay in the same area and check they have parking.
If you think you need more or less time somewhere just adjust it when you're booking everything
Many places have BBQ facilities so drop into the butchers or fishmongers during the day and finish the day / start the evening with a barbie and a few beers / wines
These itineraries can be done either by campervans in campsites or cars staying in hotels. Both have their benefits. Some people love camping and the great outdoors while others prefer a few luxuries. The budget for either will depend mainly on how much you spend on the vehicle. There's nothing stopping the car drivers getting a cabin at the campgrounds which are likely cheaper than their hotels. The car option🚗 will likely be as cheap and more comfortable also. There are no motels unless there are no other options.
The campervan option will be more adventurous and spend more time in nature. New Zealand is well catered for Camper-vans🚙 and you can save money on accommodation, meals and drinking. As well as having the freedom to come and go where you please and providing security for your belongings. If the van is self contained (Has it's own toilet) you will have more options on free camping. You will need to book either vehicle for 19 days, starting and finishing in Wellington. There will be several camping options for each place. Free with responsibilities when practicable. Sometimes with the car option you will be staying in a different town and the itinerary will be slightly altered.

Hopefully you've still got some energy left because you're off to Queenstown - the self proclaimed "Adventure Capital of the World". The town where A. J. Hackett founded the first commercial bungy jump in 1988 and it cost $75 per jump. Over a million jumps later and nobody has died. So there's nothing to hold you back except perhaps a fear of heights and maybe common sense. There are a lot of other adrenalin inducing activities around town and the only other thing holding you back is the size of your wallet / purse. The Shotover Jet was one of the originals and still good fun. The Skyline Gondola is a must for the views alone and the luge is a laugh. If you haven't had enough bungy jumping there's more of that up here too. For golfers a round at the Queenstown Golf Club is a must. And if you have a spare $500 plus you can tack on a Par 3 19th that is reached by helicopter. Drive to Glenorchy, Paradise and Kinloch and make a day trip out of it. Do a scenic walk and check out all of the other high points in the area. It's a great spot for horse riding or kayaking. Great food and nightlife options and when you get the late night munchies head down to the legendary Fergburgers which has grown into an empire.
Car - IN TOWN stay at or near - Heartland Hotel Queenstown *** - Free parking, balcony, few minutes walk to the centre, panoramic lake and mountain views, lobby bar, restaurant

When you've made your fortune head up New Zealand's highest sealed road the Crown Range. It is very steep in parts so be aware of weather conditions outside of summer and if necessary go via Cromwell. There views are incredible and there are a few points of interest worth stopping at along the way. Spend some time in historic Cardrona. There's quite a bit to see and do here. In winter it's a ski resort, but in summer you can try Mountain Carting, horse riding, quad biking, mountain biking or take the Cardrona Gondala up to the summit. Don't forget to leave your bra at the famous Cardrona Bra Fence then do a tour and pick up supplies at the Cardrona Distillery. When you're ready head to the famous Cardrona Hotel, one of only two buildings left over from the Goldrush days. They have award winning food, a fantastic beer garden. Wanaka is only 25 km away.

Wanaka has been living in Queenstown's shadow but recently people are starting to realise that it has a lot to offer. It is a very pleasant small town by the side of Lake Wanaka. There are some wonderful walks and various daredevil activities to get the adrenaline pumping. Or there's Puzzling World to play tricks with your mind. There are almost as many things to do here as big sister Queenstown so take your pick. And it's most famous resident is the much photographed #ThatWanakaTree featured in the background photo behind this page. You could also head back to Cardrona for a meal at the pub and more time at the Adventure Park.
There are a lot of options for dining and nightlife as you would expect

You'll be getting blasé about the amazing scenery by now, but don't worry there's plenty more to come. Heading up towards the Haast Pass stop and do the Blue Pools track, it's short and flat. Spectacular views to go and see pure glacial water. After the Pass is the Monro Beach Track, which is also flat and will take about an hour or so. It will take you through ferns and rainforest until you hear the waves crashing and break through to the beach and your first look at the west coast. If you're lucky you might see some Tawaki Penguins. Either way it's a wonderful walk. Now that you've worked up an appetite you can stop at The Salmon Farm Cafe for lunch. Next stop is the Fox Glacier Lookout and the 40 minute walk to Lake Matheson. The Lake is nestled inside ancient forest and provides excellent mirror views of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman. By now you should be ready to soak those tired leg muscles in the Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools (closed at the time of writing) uniquely situated amongst the rainforest. Or the Waiho Hot Tubs nearby. It's been a big day, you've earned a feed and a drink.

About 16 km before you get there you'll see a turn off to the right for the West Coast Tree Top Walk and Cafe. Spend the afternoon around town. It's a very arty crafty place so shoppers will be happy. You can watch glass blowers at work and also learn about New Zealand jade or greenstone which is what the South Island is named after. Visit the National Kiwi Centre and perhaps the museum Enjoy some fish and chips and the sunset down the beach by the unique Hokitika sign. After dark go and visit the Glow-worm Dell. Being an old gold mining town there are some historic pubs around town too. And the Woodstock Hotel is just out of town.

After breakfast head on up to the stunning Hokitika Gorge and do the short 2km loop to take in the sights. The bright blue water of the river may look amazing but stay out as it can be very dangerous. Then it's "on the road again" and that road is the Great Coast Road which Lonely Planet rates in the top 10 of all coast roads. High praise indeed. Coincidentally Kaikoura actually means "eat crayfish" in Maori. So that's what you should be doing. If you have extra days up your sleeve this is a great place to have them. Swim with dolphins and seals. (Lonely Planet Top 10 marine experience in the world) Go whale watching. Eat crayfish. The dolphins here are quite small and happy and playful. Sperm whales are seen all year here and it is one of the best places in the world to see them. You can even see them on an aerial tour. As well as dolphins and whales there are sea lions, fur seals, penguins and all sorts of bird species including the Royal Albatross.
Get up early for some amazing sunrises. there are walks, quad bikes, seal kayaks, mountain bikes trails and all sorts of ways to get around and see the wonderful countryside. Fly in and out of the capital Wellington and do a big clockwise loop. These itineraries can be done either by campervans in campsites or cars staying in hotels. Both have their benefits. Some people love camping and the great outdoors while others prefer a few luxuries. The budget for either will depend mainly on how much you spend on the vehicle. The car option🚗 will likely be as cheap and more comfortable also. There's nothing stopping the car drivers getting a cabin at the campgrounds which are likely cheaper than their hotels. New Zealand is well catered for Camper-vans🚙 and you can save money on accommodation, meals and drinking. As well as having the freedom to come and go where you please and providing security for your belongings. If the van is self contained (Has it's own toilet) you will have more options on free camping. You will need to book either vehicle for 28 days, starting and finishing in Wellington. There will be camping options for each place. Free with responsibilities when practicable. Sometimes with the car option you will be staying elsewhere and the itinerary will be slightly altered.
When the time comes put your van or car on the very scenic Inter-Islander between Wellington and Picton. There are numerous sailings each day so you can be flexible with your plans. This is a scaled down version of the other two itineraries, hopefully keeping in most of the best bits. It means a few longer days behind the wheel but not too many. It is best done in summer for the long days when it doesn't get dark until around 8.30 pm. Distances will be whatever is most between the camper van or car and includes sights along the way. I believe it's best to be off of the roads well before dark, whatever the transport - settled in to your accommodation and enjoying Happy Hour sundowners.
Wellington is a very pleasant city, on the water and not too hectic. Great food and coffee culture and drinking spots. There are some pretty impressive museums like Te Papa and natural attractions. Stay downtown where everything is within easy walking distance.
Stay at or near The Cambridge Hotel *** - great location minutes from everything, good value, a Wellington icon since 1883, gastro-pub, range of room options including dorms. On your first afternoon just stroll around and get to know the city. If you're here at the right timeyou might be able to have a night at the cricket or rugby if it's on. Or Courtney Place is only 2 minutes walk away for plenty of bars and restaurants. If you have any extra time in the city there are a heap of tours below the Walking map⬇️.
After some breakfast spend the day sight seeing. Drop in to the hire place just to make sure everything is in order to pick up your vehicle tomorrow morning. Your Wellington Walk might look something like this -

Hopefully you've still got some energy left because you're off to Queenstown - the self proclaimed "Adventure Capital of the World". The town where A. J. Hackett founded the first commercial bungy jump in 1988 and it cost $75 per jump. Over a million jumps later and nobody has died. So there's nothing to hold you back except perhaps a fear of heights or common sense maybe. There are lot's of other Adrenalin inducing activities around town and the only other thing holding you back is the size of your wallet / purse. The Shotover jet was one of the originals and still good fun. The Skyline Gondola is a must for the views alone and the luge is a laugh. And if you haven't had enough bungy there's more up here too. For golfers a round at theQueenstown Golf Clubis a must. And if you have a spare $500 plus you can tack on a Par 3 19th that is reached by helicopter.
