· History -

In 1942 the Japanese occupied the Hotel. It was their headquarters for East Java. It was also used as military barracks and as a temporary prison for Dutch women and their children.

In 1969 it was named after the ancient Indonesian Kingdom of Majapahit.

It had a major restoration in the mid 1990s had another name change and came back to the Hotel Majapahit in 2006.

The first stone of the building was laid by Lucas's 7 year old son Eugene.

September 19 1945 it was the site of the famous flag incident which led the way to eventual Indonesian independence. The Dutch raised their flag on the hotel's flag pole and the locals weren't happy. Jakarta had claimed independence two day prior.

Tempers flared and the Dutch were forced from the area. The local youths tore the blue stripe from the bottom of the flag turning it into the Indonesian bicolour red and white flag.
