Bermuda was settled by shipwrecked colonists in the 17th century. It may surprise you that Bermuda isn't one island it is made up of 181 islands!!

Just like the Chateaux Lake Louise in Canada the hotel is named after Queen Victoria's 6th child Princess Louise. She had visited Bermuda in 1883 and was very complimentary.

During WWII the hotel became an intelligence centre where all communications bound for Europe and the USA were intercepted and analysed by 1,500 "Censorettes" who were mainly female university students. They were looking for messages in invisible ink and microdots.

It was purchased by local billionaires in 2012 and given a 100 million dollar facelift for the 2017 Americas Cup.

Mark Twain was a keen visitor and came on eight separate occasions. He wrote "You can go to heaven if you want - I'd rather stay in Bermuda". As he grew older he spent more time here. He was involved in fighting to ban cars and raising funds for the hospital and other projects.

Ian Fleming's short story Quantum of Solace is set in Bermuda. Real life spy "Little Bill" Canadian Sir William Stephenson was a guest at the hotel. He died in Bermuda in 1989 at the age of 92 and is buried at St. John's Church in Pembroke. He is the man James Bond is meant to be based on. The million dollar giant fish tank in Dr. No is said to be based on one he saw at the hotel in the Gazebo Bar. Much of Fleming's books were based on his war time experiences.
