The original building burnt to the ground and was not replaced for 60 years
This was another hotel begun by William Van Horne the President of Canadian Pacific Railway to give his wealthy passengers somewhere to stay when they reached their destination. You got to stay for free if you purchased a train ticket. The Chateaux at Banff and Lake Louise are other examples
Two world shaping conferences were held here during WWII discussing the invasion of Normandy and the use of atomic weapons among other things.

The old brass mailbox in the lobby was featured in a South Korean supernatural soap opera. The story of a missing WWII postcard from a soldier asking his sweetheart to wait for him had inspired the show's producers to shoot an episode in the hotel. There has been a five-fold increase in South Korean visitors since then.
