Opened in 1923 the hotel enjoyed being the most popular hotel in Rio for VIP's and Hollywood stars for 40 years.

It started going into decline in the 1960's when Brazil got a new capital and continued in the 70's when a lot of new hotels opend up.

By 1985 there were plans to close it down. Orient-Express Hotels bought it and gave it a refurbishment in 1989. It has reclaimed it's spot and once again this is where the big names stay.

Covid - 19 closed the hotel for the first time in its history in 2020, Graves were dug on the beach in front of the hotel to protest the death toll of the pandemic
