  • London Gatwick LGW - the Gatwick Express links to London Victoria Train station and the Tube. It takes ½ an hour and you also have train and taxi options.

FOOD

  • Chicken Tikka Masala - the National dish enjoyed after a night of drinking and one of the positive results of the British Raj.

  • Fish & Chips - the fish came from Jewish exiles and the chips came from the Belgians

  • Bangers & Mash - sausages, mashed potato and onion gravy. Apparently in WWI sausages were made with cheap fillers and a lot of water. When cooked they would explode, or bang.

  • Spotted Dick - a pudding full of currants or raisins. The pudding is the dick and the fruit is the spots

  • Toad in the Hole - sausages cooked in Yorkshire pudding batter often with onion gravy and veg. Another dish you might find down the pub

  • English Breakfast - big fry up hangover cure (or enhancer) with eggs, bacon, toast, baked beans, sausages, black pudding and grilled tomatoes

  • Bubble & Squeak - my favourite with bacon and fried eggs. Usually refried leftovers from the Sunday roast. Originally it was beef and cabbage fried but rationing in WWII turned it into more of a vegetarian dish. The name coming from the noise the ingredients make frying in the pan

  • Sunday Roast - beef, pork or chicken with roast potatoes, veg, Yorkshire Pudding and gravy

  • Ploughman's Lunch - common pub lunch, the name was probably crated as a cheese promotion in the 1950's and 60's. It consists of crusty bread and butter, a selection of English cheeses, pickled onions, chutney and pickles

  • Eton Mess - from the famous school has been around since 1893. It consists of meringue, strawberries and whipped cream

  • Afternoon Tea - was invented by the seventh Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Russell in 1840. Queen Victoria was a big fan and helped to make it famous.

LONDON PUBS -

  • English pubs are famous throughout the world and London has some great examples. They have been around since the ancient Roman days when they were known as Tabernae.

  • With the industrial age came pollution and water was no longer safe to drink. So they had to drink beer! And many pubs sprang up.

  • The term Pub was coined in the Victorian era after the name Public House. They still remain the place to relax with friends, have a meal and some also provide accommodation. They are places where all walks of life come together.

  • London pubs are full of history and many are named after historic events and people. Some are even said to be haunted.

  • Here's a few worth checking out -

  • The Churchill Arms 1750, Kensington - it's hard to miss this place that is dripping with flowers on the outside and crammed with Churchill memorabilia on the inside. It is close to Kensington Palace.

  • The Spaniards Inn 1585, Hampstead Heath - originally built by two Spanish brothers it is one of the most haunted London pubs. Dick Turpin was said to have been born here and he still makes the occasional appearance. Another one of Dicken's haunts it features in "the Pickwick Papers" and even appears in Bram Stoker's "Dracula". It's walled beer garden is one of the best in London.

  • The French House 1891, Soho - has a no music, no TV, no mobile phones and no machines rule which makes it a great place to have a conversation. It was originally called "The York Minster". Orson Welles and Errol Flynn drank wine in the cellar here during WWII. During WWII the pub became the unofficial headquarters of the Free French forces.

  • Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese rebuilt 1667, Fleet Street - claimed to be the most famous pub in the world on their website. It was an old Chophouse in the 17th century and they change the sawdust on the floor twice a day. Famous literary figures who have been here include Dickens (who seems to have spent a lot of time at all of these places), Mark Twain, George Orwell and Arthur Conan Doyle. It's most famous resident Polly the parrot was stuffed and now sits in a glass case.

  • Prospect of Whitby 1520, Wapping - the oldest pub on the Thames, most areas of the pub including the terrace and beer garden have spectacular views over the river. Originally named "The Pelican" it was a notorious haunt for smugglers, thieves and pirates. The locals colloquially called it "the Devil's Tavern". It was also the site of cock fighting and it had a bare knuckles boxing ring. Famous guests include Dickens, Samuel Pepys and Whistler's mother's son - Whistler the artist. And it is said to be haunted.

  • The George 1676, Borough High St - located near London Bridge and the Borough Market it is managed by the National Trust and is the last galleried inn in London. Back in the day people would park their coaches up and spend the night here. There is outdoor seating in the large courtyard. Famous visitors include William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill, Princess Margaret, Beyoncé and Madonna.

  • The Star Tavern circa post WWII, Belgravia - originally built to house the servants of nobility. The Great Train Robbery was planned here, make sure to have a look at the upstairs bar where it happened. Run by a character in the 50's and 60's named Paddy Kennedy who enjoyed verbally abusing his customers. Sometimes he would single one out for the special treatment. Constant abuse all night. Regular clientele like Bing Crosby, Princess Margaret, Peter O'Toole, Diana Dors and other famous people at the time loved it. It was a prime rendezvous point for John Profumo and Christine Keeler.

  • The Hawley Arms 1851, Camden - is known as a live music pub. It was Amy Winehouse's local and she used to jump behind the bar and pull a few pints. Located next to the Camden Market it became the British music industry's favourite pub. Recently it has starred in a Netflix series Baby Reindeer posing as the "The Heart".

  • The Grapes 1720, Limehouse Reach - originally "The Bunch of Grapes", there has been a pub on this spot since 1583. Presently owned by actor Sir Ian McKellen who sometimes reads out the quiz questions. It has been mentioned in books by Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle and in Samuel Pepy's Diary. It claims to have served Sir Walter Raleigh and Dickens is said to have danced on the tables.

  • The Mayflower Pub circa 1550, Rotherhithe - this pub on the River Thames has stunning river views from the outdoor decked area. You can still see the 1620 mooring spot where the ship called the Mayflower waited to take the pilgrims over to the New World. It's a great place to watch the sunset too.

LONDON CURRY HOUSES -

  • There is no such thing as curry but that hasn't stopped it from becoming England's national dish. Or more accurately Chicken Tikka Masala. In fact masala describes a sauce or gravy and curry is an English word describing an Indian sauce or gravy. Another another anomaly here is that these Curry Houses are Indian Restaurants. In fact more than 8 out of 10 Indian Restaurants in the UK are actually owned and run by Bangladeshis.

  • Curry was being served in London Coffee Houses as early as 1733. Nabobs returning from India wanted to recreate their experiences there. Queen Victoria was a big fan and Indian Restaurants continued to spring up around the capital and elsewhere. Nowadays there are more Indian Restaurants in Greater London than New Delhi and Mumbai combined.

  • Sometime along the journey it became the late night feed of choice after a night of drinking. And the place to go is Brick Lane. Back in the mid 2000's there were 60 Curry Houses here, but that number has decreased to 23 at the moment.

  • Another popular curry you will find is the curry sauce offered at Fish and Chip shops. It originated in the 70's when many Fish and Chip shops were owned by Asians.

DAY 5 - Road Trip - Brighton 1n

  • It's actually going to be much cheaper renting a car than taking public transport. Even if you just went to one place a reasonable distance away. So your going on a road trip. You'll be away for 5 nights so pick it up around 10am on day one and drop it of in the pm on day six. Click here for rentals. They are at a variety of locations and you will be dropping it off in the same place.

  • Rather than speeding by on the motorways the route will be more interesting with plenty of attractions along the way. Stop off at as many or few as you like. Sometimes it will be impractical not to use the motorways. Don't hesitate to add on a day or two to fit everything in that you want to do in. It's best to keep a relaxed pace and not be rushing to get to places. Another thing to watch will be all of the entrance fees adding up to quite a substantial amount. Especially if you are a couple. So spend a bit of time working out what you want to see beforehand and plan your stops.

DAY 12 - London - Swinging Sixties

  • Back in the swinging sixties, swinging London was the epicentre with great inventions like rock music and the mini skirt. Today we are going to revisit a bit of that history with a focus on the superstar musical performers who helped change the world. Disclaimer - not everything on the tour came from that decade.

  • Make your way to Granger & Co in Chelsea for breakfast. Sloane Square is the closest tube station. Use the tube or Santander Bicycles to get around today. Check the Marker Map for locations. You should be an old hand at it by now.

Battersea Power Station

  • Mick Jagger's House - Cheyne Walk - Chelsea - many famous people have lived on this street including Henry VIII, some of his wives, Mick and Keith and their famous girlfriends.

  • David Bowie Memorial - Morley's Brixton - has become a shrine and will be protected by the local council with thoughts of expanding it with a statue and renaming the area.

  • Trident Studios - David Bowie Plaque - He recorded Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Aladdin Sane here. Many other famous albums were recorded here too.

  • London Palladium Wall of Fame - The most famous variety theatre in the world. Beatlemania was born here in 1963 and their manager Brian Epstein had an office in the building next door.

  • Handel Hendrix House - Mayfair - Separated by a wall and 200 years were two unique musical talents. Come and see their rooms. They are as different as their music.

  • Blue Plaque the Beatles - Saville Row - The Beatles played their last gig on 30 January 1969 on the roof of this building which was their Apple Corps headquarters. You've likely seen footage of it.

  • Ziggy Stardust Plaque - Heddon Street - This plaque commemorates the spot where Bowie posed for the cover of the Ziggy Stardust album. This was the album that sent his career into the cosmos. It was shot in black and white and coloured in later. Although you would have problems recognising it today.

  • Ziggy Green - Heddon Street - Any time you get hungry from here on in you will have plenty of options. Each venue does meals and are surrounded by restaurants. This one is upscale Mexican. They also have a list of eleven David Bowie cocktails you can work your way through and Bowie art on the walls. They serve his favourite dish as well - Shepherd's Pie.

  • The Starman - Heddon Street - Inspired by Bowie without going over the top. There are a few subtle pieces around. The fare here is upscale British Pub classics.

  • O'Neill's Wardour Street - Chinatown - Formerly the Flamingo Club where the Rolling Stones played their first full gig with their main line up including Charlie Watts. Their very first gig was at the Marquee just down the road. It was open from 1952 until 1969 and a veritable who's who of the music industry performed and hung out here. Now it is an Irish Pub but you can use your imagination to reminisce the good old days.

  • Ronnie Scott's - This world famous jazz club is one of the few survivors from the sixties. It opened in October 1959 and is one of the oldest jazz clubs in the world. Book your tickets beforehand and get there early enough so that you don't miss the start of the show. This is a place of legends and don't be surprised to see someone famous jump up on stage.
