Fiji has been inhabited since about 1200 BC. Initially it was Polynesians, Melanesians and Micronesians. Cannibalism was popular at one stage.

Eventually Europeans came along. The story goes that Captain Cook misheard the name Viti and that's how it became known as Fiji.

The American Civil War caused a cotton shortage with far reaching consequences. It would cause the draining of the Aral Sea and in Fiji it caused a boom which resulted in the practice of "Blackbirding". Labourers from other Pacific island were coerced and eventually kidnapped to work on the cotton fields. Conditions were poor and deteriorated into abuse and atrocities.

Britain decided she might like Fiji as a colony and used the pretext of stopping blackbirding to take control in1874. They started bring labourers over from their other colony - India. Many decided to stay after their 5 year term was up anf today they make up 35% of the population.

Fiji achieved independence in 1970. Racial tensions boiling over resulted in two bloodless coups in 1987. This resulted in dismissal from the Commonwealth which was reinstated in 1997.

Trouble flared up again with another coup in 2000 resulting in trade sanctions and boycotts. Many Indo-Fijians left the country during these troubled times. Another coup followed in 2006.

Since then they have made significant steps towards democracy and it is a safe and stable country to travel to.
