1 Sofia - 4N

  • It would be very good to start the trip on a Friday to match up with things that are only on certain days. If you can't do it just swap them with something else. The metro is a good   way to get around. Taxis can be fake and a hassle. See security issues in TIPS above.

  • Arrive in the capital Sofia and spend 4 days exploring the history, culture, wine and food of this little known country that is older than most others. On your first day  settle in to your hotel -

  1. Stay at or near R34 Boutique Hotel or next door at Les Fleurs Boutique Hotel **** - both    in a fantastic location just off Vitosha Boulevard the main commercial street in Sofia which has an abundance of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Both have airport transfers for an additional charge.

  • Head out to explore your neighbourhood. You're staying next to Vitoushi Boulevard     which is full of shops, cafes restaurants and bars to keep you occupied for a few hours. Nearly a kilometer of the section near you has been pedestrianised. Walk down to the National Palace of Culture which is an interesting leftover from the communist era.

  • For dinner, drinks and live music try the Ale House a 5 minute walk from the hotel. No   need to line up for your beers, you have your own tap at the table. Here's a few other    bars to check out in the neighbourhood.

2 Saturday

  • Be ready by 10 am for the free Trabi tour of the old Communist sites. It lasts 2 hours and you will hear a few stories from the bad old days. If you prefer you can organise   a private tour with them that isn't free. You should always leave a decent tip on any "free" tours.

  • Time for a bit of lunch and some free time. Today is Communist Day so at 4 pm you can meet up for your Communist walking tour of Sofia. This should round out your education about life behind the Iron Curtain.

  • By now you're probably feeling like a drink. And that's good because at 9 pm you are meeting up for the New Sofia Pub Crawl. A great way to meet people and visit a few bars you never would have found. Here's a few clubs for later on. Have a big night and have a sleep in in the morning.

3 Sunday

  •  After a sleep in and a hearty brunch it's time to get some fresh air. Up that majestic mountain you've been looking at down the boulevard each day. Nothing like a bit     of paragliding to shake off that hangover🍻. You can take a bus and a chairlift to   get you up Mount Vitosha. Go for a scenic hike for great views of the city, a    waterfall and even a monastery. There are some dining options on the mountain as well.

  • When you get back to town you can take in some more city views from the Sense Rooftop Bar. Try to get there for sundowners. When you get hungry the Happy Pig    is  a 10 minute walk up the road. Here's a few bars picked by locals for later.

4 Monday

  • Time to follow the Yellow Brick Road and do a walking tour of the city's highlights (you will also pass many of the other highlights along the way) -

  1. First head to the St. George Rotunda that was built in the 300s!!

  2. Next stop is the Presidency Building where you'll need to time your visit 5 minutes before the hour for the changing of the guard

  3. Saint Sofia the wise statue who replaced Lenin is next

  4. TZUM is a Soviet era department store that has been refurbished

  5. Central Sofia Market Hall is a good place to pick up a snack to keep you going and some treats for the train ride tomorrow

  6. Sofia History Museum - covering 6 periods from Prehistory to 1989

  7. Time for lunch and today it's a hearty soup at Supa Star 2

  8. Next is the star of the show the Saint Alexander Nevsky Patriach's Cathedral

  9. Finish the tour off heading back to the hotel via the Ivan Vazov National Theatre and seeing if there's something on you might like to see tonight

  • For dinner the excellent Shastlivetsa is a great place to eat the local cuisine and it's only a few minutes around the corner from the hotel. Apart from the National   Theatre there is Opera and Concerts for a bit of culture.

“Plovdiv is the biggest and loveliest of all cities. Its beauty shines from faraway.”                                                                                     - Lucian of Samosata, Ancient Greek satirist (120 – 200 A.D.)

 5  Plovdiv - 4N

  • It is one of the many cities built on 7 hills but one of the hills were used to pave the Old Town's winding cobblestone streets. It is a wonderful area with restored old buildings and a Bohemian Quarter with restaurants, bars and a lively nightlife.     There are Roman ruins, hot springs and so much to see you'll probably need to extend your stay.

  1. Stay at or near Kapana Plovdiv - in an excellent location in the Bohemian Quarter

  • Start off with a trip next door to the bakery to pick up a few treats to fortify you for your wanderings. Next head down through the Old Town to the Ancient Roman Theatre to see if there are any shows on you'd like to catch. From here backtrack to the Ancient Stadium of Philipopolis. You are now on the main street and longest pedestrian street (1.8 kms) in Europe - Knayz Alexander I Street. It goes from the Central Square in the south to the pedestrian bridge across the Maritsa River in the north. Turn right and go exploring. It will lead you to the river. You should be able     to find a good coffee, ice cream and pre dinner aperitif. Find a good spot and do some people watching.

6 Wednesday

  • Start the day with brunch after a bit of a sleep in. A free walking tour starts at            11 am outside the Municipal Building on the main street about a 10 minute walk   from the hotel. It's always good to hear a few stories from the locals. Just show up and they last around 2 hours.

  • Hopefully all of that walking has rekindled your appetite. If not just have a coffee or   a cocktail or something. There are a heap of cafes near the walking tour pick up location. Find one with outdoor tables and chairs and watch the world go by.

  • 2 options after lunch. Do a secret tour (choice of 3) or visit the Secret House of Tastings in the Old Town to sample the local Rakia. As it's secret you might have to ask the locals where it is. Both are walking distance.

  • When you're ready start strolling up the hill to Nebet Tepe (the birth certificate of Plovdiv). After you're finished scrambling around the ruins and taking in the views     of Plovdiv make your way to nearby Rahat Tepe. A well known beer garden with  great food and views. Stick around for sunset and dinner.

  • Wander down to the main street and see if there is anything going on. See a show    at the Roman Theatre or have a look through this for something you like.

7 Thursday

  • Off for a bicycle tour of town today to get a bit further out. Plovdiv is known as the  "Cyclist's City" and has over 60 kms of bike lanes. You cannot ride in the main street so   just walk the bike to avoid fines. This route only crosses it. Don't forget your bathers / swimmers / togs / budgie smugglers or whatever you like to call them. It's a 5 minute     walk up to Plovdiv Bike Rent.  Pick up your chariot then ride down to vegan friendly Raffy Bar & Gelato. They do a breakfast menu until noon including cooked English, French    toast and Omelettes.

  1.  Ride through the Tsar Simeon's Garden and past the Singing Fountains where you will      be returning to later on tonight.

  2. Next stop is the highest hill (around 300 metres) in Plovdiv, the hill with many names. Two   of them being Youth Hill and Dzhendem Tepe. You can ride around the base of the hill     on the Children's Railway. It takes about 25 minutes. Or you could walk up the relatively easy 3 km path or try riding up to reach some of the best views in the city. Coming down should be a hoot.

  3. Continue on for a lap or two at the bike park at Otdih i Cultura Park

  4. Next door is the Rowing Canal aka the Grebnata where you will find food, and beer   houses and somewhere you can sit down and relax. Fried fish, chips and beer is popular here. The channel is 2200 metres long and has a bike path around it. So if you have to   much energy go for a lap or two.

  5. Time to cool off and relax those muscles. Ride to the Aqua Park at the Saint Petersburg Hotel. It has 5 pools, casacades, waterfalls, fountains, caves, a water bar and 4 cocktail   bars. It closes at 7pm so you should get plenty of time here.

  6. If you are interested the History Museum of Plovdiv and adjoining Regional    Archaeological Museum are on your way back to the bike rental place. Drop the bike off and go home to get ready for the evening.

  • Head on down to the main street and see what's happening. There are a lot of     good ice cream shops down this way. Get to the Singing Fountains by 9.30 pm for the Sound and Light Show. Why not head out for an authentic Bulgarian meal after the show.

8 Friday

  • Something sweet for breakfast today. Specialty hand made doughnuts (the first in Bulgaria) from Bluestone Doughnuts. Better grab a few for later on. Just around the corner is Motoroads where you can pick up your wheels. You can sort it out online before you go there. If you don't want to ride a bike you could hire a car. They are reasonably cheap here. Or you could take the train or bus. It is 44 kms due north of Plovdiv and it would be handy to have transport to get around out there.

  • Your legs had a good workout yesterday so today your off to Hisarya for some Hot Spring healing. It was once a rehabilitation centre for wounded Roman soldiers. It   has 22 warm water mineral springs (16 natural and 6 drilled). You can get the health benefits by soaking in it and drinking it! It's popular with tourists and has some    good restaurants around to feed them. There are Roman ruins and a fortress   around the town.

  • If you want to visit a winery on the way out take the turn off to the left to Starosel. They have tastings and restaurants. There are some Thracian ruins out this way that predate the Roman ruins. To soak in the waters at Hisarya head for the Spa hotels    on the eastern side of town.

  • Feeling fully refreshed make your way back to town and get ready for a big night   out. If you enjoyed the Pub Crawl in Sofia it's time for your next one. it kicks off at     9 pm at the statue of Milyo. Later on you could get some live rock at Rock Bar Download.
