The seasons are Summer - June / August, Autumn - Sep / Nov, Winter - Dec / Feb, Spring - March / May.
STAY - Most hotels are available on Booking.com unless otherwise stated. It's best to get bookings with free cancellation and pay on site when you get there. Hotels chosen are usually 3*** or 4 or 5 if they are good value. They are chosen firstly for their location, value for money, positive testimonials regarding cleanliness and service and features like rooftop terraces and great views.
Since the end of Covid a lot of prices have gone through the roof. So if the selected hotel is out of your price range click on the location map and choose something cheaper nearby. Or you might prefer something else but try to stay in the same area.

Sometimes the extra expense of an organised tour is worth it. Especially in a few of these cases where there are a lot of amazing stories to be heard. It can also save organising and transport hassles too.
-
Have a look through these and see what you think. Firstly there is the siege of and the tunnel in Sarajevo. Then there is the amazing top secret bunker that was built by Tito near Konjic. Finally is some adventure and nature with a white water rafting trip from Mostar.

Start in the capital Sarajevo where the flames of World War l were ignited a couple of minutes walk from your hotel. When Yugoslavia fell apart in the 90's it was held siege for 1,425 days. The longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. You can visit the tunnel museum they used to survive the siege. Amazingly they had just hosted the Winter Olympics not that many years before and the abandoned bobsled track is still there. Covered in graffiti.
-
These days things are a lot more peaceful. You will find the historical attractions fascinating. Find out the story behind the Canned Beef Monument. The food scene has improved too. The cafés and restaurants rival the best Europe has to offer. The nightlife is pretty good too.

Take the scenic train ride to the quiet little riverside town of Konjic. The surrounding countryside is spectacular and full of adventurous activities. How about some white water rafting or a hike along "Tobacco Smuggling Road". And Tito's Bunker will blow your mind. You should be able to organise a tour locally from Visit Konjic.
-
If you want to learn a little more about the area try this City Tour. Enjoy a few meals looking out over the river and have a little pub crawl.
-
Stay at or near Hotel Oaza *** - 500 metres from the train station, 2 minutes walk to the river, ATM onsite, restaurant, bicycle rental, terrace and garden.
Mostar - 2N
-
Continue the spectacular train journey to the famous town of Mostar. Many of us who were around at the time will remember seeing the picture postcard UNESCO listed Mostar Bridge (Stari Most) being blown up in 1993. Fortunately it's been rebuilt and if you're game enough to jump off of it they will put your name in a big ledger and give you a certificate. You are now a member of the Mostari Diving Club and you can jump for free anytime you like. Unfortunately there have been fatalities over the years.
-
This really is a stunning town that was developed in the 15th century as a part of the Ottoman Empire. The bridge and old town centre are UNESCO World Heritage sites. There are plenty of wonderful bars and restaurants to sit around relaxing and soaking in the view.
-
Head out to Blagaj Monastery for a pleasant lunch with a great view. Wander through the bazaar in the Old Town. See the stunning Kravice Falls.
-
Stay at or near Pansion Villa Nur *** - it has balconies with river views in a great location
-
Or the Hotel Emen - close to everything with a restaurant and bar
-
Villa Cardak *** - 100m from the bridge and has a bar
-
Time to hop on the train and head back to the airport in Sarajevo. Or you can fly to Foggia in Italy from Mostar. Or you could head to Dubrovnik (quite a destination by itself) and start the Croatia trip. You'll find a couple of transfer tours below including a 5 day scenic bike ride (E-bikes available).
