Mythically speaking Rome was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus who were suckled by a she-wolf. Romulus killed Remus and became the first king of Rome.
There were 7 hills and 7 kings.
Then Rome became a republic in 509 BC. The republic grew into an empire over the years and was often involved in wars.
After 180 BC Rome was split into Eastern and Western Empires.
476 AD was effectively the end of the Roman Empire.
During the renaissance period in the 15th century some of Rome's most famous buildings were built. Including the Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Basilica and the Piazza Novana.
The Kingdom of Italy was declared in 1861 and in 1870 Rome became its' capital.
In 1922 Mussolini marched on Rome with his fascist party and declared a new Italian Empire.
Rome suffered very little damage during WW2 and was briefly taken over by the Nazis.
In 1960 they hosted the Olympic games.
It remains one of the most popular tourist destinations on earth.
If you want to avoid tourists and pay cheaper prices go between October and April. You'll need some warm clothes though.
Things start warming up in May and then June to August is peak season. It is hot and humid and you will need to book your hotel at least 6 months ahead.
September the weather and tourist numbers are starting to cool down again.

Rome is a safe city. How ever being a tourist mecca draws in the usual pick pockets, bag snatchers and the like. Just be alert and aware and they'll pick on someone else.
If someone drops something let them pick it up. Don't be fooled by things you would normally do at home.
Watch out for fake Euros.
Don't accept food or drink from strangers near tourist areas (including train stations etc)
Italy is one of the world's great food destinations. Each region has it's own specialties and Rome is no different. Dubbed la cucina povera the recipes tend to be simple and with few ingredients. Try some of these while you're there.
Maritozzi - yeast buns with different fillings for breakfast, along with some Canoli and coffee (Italians don't have milk in their coffees after lunch),
Saltimbocca a la Romana - a delicious veal dish,
Allesso di Bollito - simmered beef sandwiches,
Artichokes - when in season are a local specialty,
Supplì - is a famous Roman snack consisting of a meaty, cheesey saucy croquette,
Porchetta - is a pork lovers delight, deboned, seasoned, rolled, slow cooked to perfection,
Carbonara - local invention which uses eggs - not cream, for the creaminess
Cacio e Pepe - simple but good if done properly, pasta with cheese and pepper,
Bucatini all’Amatriciana with a spicy tomato sauce and pork cheek,
Pizza al Taglio or Pizza by the slice is how they do it in Rome and you'll find it everywhere, it's worth checking out some of the famous ones,
Gelato - you should have one every afternoon, try it at Giolitti, a few blocks from the Pantheon where they have been selling it since 1900.
And if you're still hungry head off to Eataly for a megastore of Italian specialties and all things "food".
Nightlife starts and finishes late in Rome. People don't go out for dinner until after 9 pm. People often head off to bed after a quick cornetto for breakfast on the way home.
How ever if you do start a bit earlier during happy hour you are almost guaranteed to get some bar snacks with your drink.
Some of the different areas to head off to include Testaccio a cobble stoned area of bars and restaurants that parties until dawn. It is also the area for clubbing.
Pigneto is an up and coming neighborhood with a bit of a raw edge.
Trastevere has a bohemian vibe and has lots of restaurants and bars.
San Lorenzo is a University district and has an alternative atmosphere.
Campo de’ Fiori is a good place to mingle with people from a diverse group of countries.
Rome is expensive but with a few tips and tricks you should be able to stay around a reasonable level of spending especially if there are two of you to share accommodation and transport costs.

Start the 9 day trip on any day other than a Sunday if you can. That is if you want to visit the Pope's Summer Palace at Castel Gandolfo - highly recommended. Last entry 1 PM weekdays and 4,30 PM Saturdays. Book your tickets online beforehand.
Fly into Rome and stay in the colourful bohemian neighbourhood of Trastevere. It is a great area for restaurants, bars and nightlife so you don't need to travel too far in the evenings. It's also well situated for transport and the major attractions.
Get around to the must sees like the Colosseum, the Vatican, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. Save time and jump the queue when necessary. Eat some of Rome's iconic dishes. Hire a Vespa and see Rome as the locals do. Or take a tour if you don't ride. Do some walking tours. Do a Segway tour. Drink coffee, eat gelato, drink Prosecco & Aperol Spritz. Go to the Jewish Bakery. Eat the best porchetta sandwich in Rome. Go for a walk and get lost. Wander into a trattoria and let the waiter pick your meal.
There's lots to pack into 3 days but with a bit of organisation you'll be surprised how much you can see and do. The major sights aren't too spread out and restaurants and bars are open quite late. It's common to stop off for breakfast on the way home from a big night out. You might need to catch up on a bit of sleep after this one.
Book all of your tickets for the major attractions online before you come and get skip the line if it's going to be busy. Have a look at the 9 Day trip below you might see a day or two that you may want to interchange. Or extend this one a little.

A 3 night sojourn down south to Bari and its surrounds will balance it all out nicely.

Bari - DAY 4
Have an early start if you can. Leave your main pack at the hotel and pack your day pack for 4 days. Take the train from Trastevere Station to the main station Roma Termini. Then take the train to Bari. There are only a few direct ones per day and the travel time changes from 4 hours to 6 - 7 hours. Which you will have sorted out on arrival. When you arrive in Bari check out your return ticket.
Stay in the old town - Bari Vecchia which is 1½ kms from the train station

Bari looks across the Adriatic Sea to Dubrovnik in Croatia. It is famous for the Orecchiette Ladies who sit in the alleyways outside of their doorways rolling out fresh pasta to make the local specialty Orecchiette (Little Ears). Have a try if you're game enough.
The old town is a great place to stay in and explore. It is a maze of narrow streets hiding delightful surprises like cafes, castles and cathedrals. Not to mention a heap of bars and restaurants. Close to the hotel is the main square Piazza Mercantile. A perfect spot to sit with a coffee and a cannoli and watch the world go by. Lungomare Nazario Sauro is the kilometer long seafront promenade and an opportunity to walk off a few of those calories. The views are great and you can take them in with a drink here and there.
Spend your first day and night exploring your new neighbourhood. Organise your transport (Scooters, motorbikes and cars are available - check the Marker Map) for tomorrow so you can get an early start. You've got a lot to see. Bari - DAY 5 🏍️🛵🚗
Road trip down the coast today. After an early breakfast get your transport that you organised yesterday. You will find a few rental places on the Marker Map. You'll need it for a couple of days. Neither hotel has parking so if you can't find something public nearby you might need to take it back to the rental place overnight. You'll be coming back after dinner so the parking option is the best one. Close to this rental place is one of Bari's most open secrets. El Pedrohas fantastic food at dirt cheap prices so you might want to fit it in to your schedule. Don't forget to take your bathers.

Polignano a Mare - follow the coast road down to the Pearl of the Adriatic with the famous beach Lama Monachile. Cool off with a refreshing dip here or one of the nearby beaches that are even better. Have a good look around and if you're looking for coffee and corneto Cafe Luna would be a good choice.
Monopoli - a little further on and with an Old Town and beaches to check out.
Grotte di Castellana - head inland and the next stop is the stunning caves at Castellana
Alberobello - doesn't look like the other villages. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is distinctive because of it's conical roofs. Rione Monti is the area you want to head for and it might make a good spot for lunch or refreshments. It is an amazing area and you'll want to spend some time here wandering around.
Locorotondo - is the most beautiful white village in Italy. Have a look for yourself.
Cisternino - is the third magic village in a row. You might want to head to Piazza dell’Orologio the main square for some of the views. If you're needing sustenance you might want to visit the barbequing butchers. If it's getting close to ice-cream o'clock you might want to visit Bar FOD di Pinto Francesco.
Ostuni - aka the White City. More whitewashed beauty. Get lost in the lanes of the old town. Do a bit of shopping and eat a few fortifying snacks along the way. You'll work off the calories as you eat them.😹 Make your way to the top and check out the view. Pick up some items from the local craftsmen.
Porto Villanova - head back to the coast here and stretch your legs. Head to the waterfront for refreshments. It will take you around 35 minutes to get to Grotta Palazzese Restaurant in Polignano a Mare from here.
Grotta Palazzese Restaurant - make your way to this special restaurant for aperitifs and dinner. It will be one to remember. It will be a 40 minute drive back to Bari.
Stroll around the old town bars and get ready for another big day tomorrow.
Bari - DAY 6 🏍️🛵🚗
Off to the north today. A longer distance and time as yesterday but with fewer places to stop off at. First of all you will head inland and finish the loop coming back along the coast. Finishing up at a wonderful restaurant for sunset aperitifs and dinner.

Altamura - make your way inland to a hidden gem with plenty of history. Famous for it's treasured bread - Pane di Altamura which has received POD status. Homer mentioned it over two thousand years ago. It might pay to pick up a couple of loaves back while you are here. They even have a bread museum. Piazza Duomo is the place to get a coffee and sit for a while. If you are interested in churches, history, architecture or bread 🥖 you won't be disappointed.
Castel del Monte - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a much talked about and mysterious one at that. Worth getting an audio guide to explain some of those mysteries.
Minervino Murge - the Balcony of Puglia - sits on a couple of hills which means it has a few viewpoints, a lot of stairs and a tangled maze of narrow streets in the town centre. Lunch will be coming shortly after the cave church so try to hold off eating.
St. Michael's Cave - a cave church where people have been worshipping for over a thousand years. Outside of April to September you need to make a reservation. During that time period a small donation is all that is needed.
Trani - back to the coast and gorgeous Trani. All the usual culprits are here - cathedrals, castles and museums. Or you might like to find a comfy spot, have an ice cream and watch the world wander past. The historical centre is a good place to start. It will take 45 minutes to get to the restaurant from here.
CrudiCrudi - try to time your arrival at this wonderful restaurant on the coast just before sunset. After a few aperitifs stick around for a delicious seafood dinner looking out over the sea before heading back into town. It is only 12 kms away.
You can let your hair down tonight and have a sleep-in in the morning.
rome - DAY 7
You've had a couple of busy days so you can relax today. Sleep in. Take your time over a nice unhurried brunch. Have a swim and lay on the beach. Do some last minute shopping. Get back to the hotel in Rome in time to have a lay down and a shower before you head out for aperitifs. Stay local if you like. Or get in the mood and hit the town again.
rome - DAY 8
A bit of time traveltoday for a change of pace. The ancient Appian Way - 'the Queen of Roads' - is one of those original roads that led to Rome. In fact it was the first of 29. It was built in 312 BC. You will be riding back into history along the same road used by Julius Caesar, St. Peter and Jesus. One of the main attractions is the Papal Palace of Castel Gondolfo which isn't open Sundays. You would have already bought your tickets online. The last entry on weekdays is 1pm so you'll need to get an early start. On Saturday's it is 4.30 pm

After a hearty breakfast - try Cafe 67 which will break up the walk - make your way to Easy bike Rent and get yourself an e-mountain bike for the day. It is a 1.6 km walk all up. Book the bike online beforehand. The ancient road can be a bit bumpy in places so the more suspension and stability you have the better off you will be. You will be travelling around 60 kms today so just check the bike has enough range. You could do a tour with them but this will be at least half the price and much better😁. You can also do it on horseback but you won't see as much🐎.
Check out the links to see what you want to visit as you have to buy tickets online for some of them. One lot of catacombs is probably enough for one example. Remember it's ruins all along the way so you may want to dedicate a bit more time to Castel Gondolfo.
At the halfway point of your journey you'll be having lunch by Lake Albano. Then you will return by a slightly different route so that you can take the worthwhile detour through the Park of the Aqueducts and a few other sites.

Baths of Caracalla - one of the best preserved bath houses of Ancient Rome.
Porta San Sebastiano - their is a museum here to provide information about the Aurelian Walls.
Church of Domine Quo Vadis - Where St. Peter bumped into Jesus and they have his footprints to prove it.
Villa di Massenzio - is the villa of the emperor Maxentius andCircus of Maxentius an ancient racetrack is part of the complex. It could seat 150,000 people which was double the capacity of the Colosseum.
Appia Antica Caffee - a little further along where you can get refreshments and also rent bikes if you only wanted to ride around the park. You can get here by public transport.
Punto Info Parco Appia Antica - information point where you will leave the Via Antica Appia and make your way to the Castel Gandolfo (Follow the Map).
Castel Gandolfo - situated on a hill with great views of Lake Albano. It is the Summer Papal Palace and Gardens which has been opened to the public in recent times. It is a part of the Vatican State. Remember last entry weekdays is 1PM and 4.30 PM Saturdays. Closing time is an hour later but you'll probably want more time than that. Piazza della Liberta the town's main square is home to the world's first post box.
Lunch by the Lake - if you have a look at the Marker Map you will see 6 recommended restaurants all with good lake views. Or you might like to eat up in the Castle Town.
Grande Ninfeo di Villa dei Quintili - this was the actual entrance for Villa of the Quintili.
Park of the Aqueducts - free, is one of the green lungs of the city. There are 7 aqueducts including the still working Felix Aqueduct.
Ninfeo di Egeria - aka the Nymphaeum of Egeria. A nymphaeum was a monument or chamber built in dedication to a nymph or nymphs ( A mythological spirit of nature often imagined as a beautiful young maiden). There were often used for weddings.
Drop the bike off and head back towards the hotel to freshen up. Maybe stop in at La Puntaon the way past for a few refreshing Margaritas. You could eat and drink locally tonight or for something completely different how about a visit to the Gladiators.

rome / Fregene - DAY 9
Last day today and it's your choice.Golf (if you hire a car you could combine a round of golf with the itinerary below the Map) - horse riding - shopping - spa day - people watching and drinking - free walking tour - cooking lesson - food tour - Segway tour - have a dayby the pool - rooftop opera - DIY Rooftop Pub Crawl (finish up looking over the Forum at sunset) - see something you missed out on earlier or as much or little as you feel like. If you don't mind driving you could leave town and do something completely different. See below the map.
If you don't do the rooftop pub crawl you could do it in reverse in the evening, starting with sunset views over the Forum. If you have organised your own transport for golf, a spa visit or any other reason try to head to Singita Miracle Beach Club at Fregene for their amazing sunsets and cocktails.
Or a scenic dinner cruise on the Tiber might be a nice relaxing way to spend your last night. It probably depends on what time you're flying out tomorrow. You may want to party hard and have breakfast on the way home. Either way enjoy yourself and eat and drink the things you are going to miss the most.
Or maybe the best idea is you could check out andhire a car. There are 3 rental places nearby if you have a look on the Marker Map. Or Hertz is a half hour walk south.
You then drive to the popular volcanic Lake Bracciano and have a swim, go kayaking or sailing. It has some well equipped beaches.
Make your way to your accommodation B&B Sinbad The Lifeboat(Street Parking) in Fregene a 5 minute walk away from the Singita Miracle Beach Club. Only one of 20 beach clubs this area also has a lot to offer. Breakfast included, restaurant, bar, garden, private beach and packed lunches available.
Get down there before sunset and party the night away.
Take yourself to the airport the next day and drop the car off on your way out. It's less than a half hour away.
